The Royals (20-17) finally had a day off before beginning the series in Oakland. Kansas City finished a three game series with the Los Angeles Angels before they had the day off. The Royals won two out of those three, losing the middle of the three games. Alex Gordon is having a good season and is leading the Royals in some major categories. Gordon is hitting .331, which leads the team and also has six home runs, a team-high. Billy Butler owns the lead with 29 RBI’s for Kansas City. James Shields is starting on Friday for the ninth time of the season. Shields is just 2-3 on the year but has the best ERA on the Royals, 2.48.
Oakland (20-22) also got a day off between their last game and the series opener with the Royals. They lost their last two, however, to the Texas Rangers on their home field. Oakland is led bt Josh Donaldson, who is averaging .316 from the plate this season, a team-high. Donaldson also leads the team in runs batted in with 25. Jarrod Parker, 2-5, will start on Friday for the A’s.
The Royals are 21-16 against the spread this year and the A’s are 23-19.
Shields has easily been the better pitcher between these two starters this season and that is the edge between two very evenly matched lineups at the sports book.
