The NFL preseason odds from this opening week affair have the home team Philadelphia Eagles favored by -3 ½ points with an over under line set at 42 points.
This game will mark the coaching debut for new Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly who moves to the NFL after a head coaching stint with the Oregon Ducks. Kelly has no experience in the league but an outstanding reputation as an offensive mind who was able to generate a high tempo offense yet still do a respectable job on the defensive side of the football. That was the piece has been lost in all of the talk concerning the offense for Oregon the past few seasons. The Eagles bottomed out last season in the final year of the Andy Reid era as the club closed with a 4-12 record. The team was haunted by mistakes on the offensive side of the football as Michael Vick had issues securing the football and the team lacked execution inside the red zone. The defense has gone south since the death of former Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. It was once a trademark for the Eagles. Philadelphia gave up 28 points per game in the 2012 season. The Eagles and Patriots have scrimmaged this week and early indications are that Philadelphia’s secondary has had problems with the Patriots passing game. The secondary was an issue for the Eagles last season. New England has experience at the quarterback position with Tom Brady, Ryan Mallet and the four year veteran Tim Tebow will make his debut with the team. There will be a competition for the backup to Tom Brady so expect to see the best from both Mallet and Tebow on Friday night. New England is stacked at the running back position with Shane Vereen, Stevan Ridley, Leon Washington and Brandon Bolden.
