The Yankees come in on a three game winning streak, a sweep of the Cleveland Indians, but only winning four of their last ten. CC Sabathia went the distance yesterday against his old team striking out nine. Offensively Brett Gardner continued his tear, hammering his sixth home run of the year. Tonight they send Phil Hughes and his 5.37 ERA to the mound while Aaron Harang gets the nod for the Mariners. Hughes surrendered five runs to the Red Sox last time out, giving up seven hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings. Consistency has been a problem all year for the 26 year old right hander, having not won a game since May 10th in Kansas City. Hughes’ last start against Seattle nearly a month ago was a disaster, not getting out of the first inning and allowing six runs on seven hits.
Seattle lost an exciting 16 inning battle last night to Chicago after Kyle Seattle hit a grand slam in extras extending the game. For tonight’s starter Aaron Harang, the numbers might be below par, but he has two quality starts in his last two outings. The veteran enters with a 2-5 record and a 5.82 ERA, but has won his last two home games including a complete game shutout against Sand Diego on May 27th. Although Harang has improved, he hasn’t proven consistent success against teams above .500.
Seeing as both these pitchers have proven to be erratic, its safe to say at least one will implode and the other will not pitch a gem. Take over 7.5 runs at sports books.
