In the nightcap of day one in the Big East tournament, 11-seed Rutgers takes on 14-seed DePaul. Check out the college basketball odds at Bovada sportsbook.
Rutgers (14-15, 5-13) were able to win five games in Big East play. Four of those five conference wins came against teams that finished in the bottom five in the Big East standings. The other win was a surprising victory at home against Pittsburgh is now ranked 17th in the country and were 24th at the time. The Scarlet Knights have lost 11 of their last 13 with both of those wins coming against Seton Hall, including their last regular season game. On the other hand, eight of Rutgers’ 13 conference losses came to teams who were ranked at the time of the game.
Rounding out the Big East Standings is DePaul (11-20, 2-16) who won just two regular season games in the conference. The first came early in the conference schedule on the road at Providence by 10 points. Providence is currently fighting for an NCAA Tournament bid, as they are on the bubble. The other was a 75-69 win at home in the only meeting with the very same Rutgers team that they are preparing to face in this first-round matchup. Worrel Clahar scored 19 in that meeting when he is averaging just over seven per game.
Rutgers was 13-13 against the spread throughout the season while going 8-10 ATS in the Big East. Coming off of a win, like they are, Rutgers is 6-5 ATS. DePaul is 12-16 ATS for the season and just 6-12 in conference games. Coming off a loss, DePaul is 8-11 ATS.
Rutgers is my choice for this matchup but in a reasonably close game. DePaul has shown that they can beat Rutgers but has struggled mightily the rest of the way. Rutgers, on the other hand can definitely beat the teams near and below them in the standings on a consistent basis. They cannot beat any of the top Big East squads, but DePaul finished dead-last so bet the Scarlet Knights at online sportsbooks.
