Easily the biggest upset of the Round of 64 was Florida Gulf Coast’s beatdown of 2-seed and popular Final Four pick, Georgetown. The run continues against San Diego State for a right to play in the Sweet 16. Get NCAA Tournament odds at Bovada sportsbook.
San Diego State’s (23-10) matchup with Oklahoma might have been the least talked about game in the entire Round of 64. Very under the radar, the Aztecs took care of business by beating the Big 12 team by 15 points. Then, their chances for the Sweet 16 increased incredibly after the Georgetown Hoyas were defeated by an unlikely suitor.
Florida Gulf Coast (25-10) is one of the most talked about teams in the college basketball world right now. In just their second year as a Division I school, the Eagles have won their first ever game, against Georgetown, and have a chance to play in the Sweet 16. They defended extremely well and were able to play incredibly in the half-court. Because of the win, Florida Gulf Coast is the only undefeated team in the NCAA Tournament. Some people might not know this but FGCU defeated Miami (FL), now a 2-seed in the tournament, earlier in the season.
San Diego State is 14-13-1 against the spread and covered the spread in their Round of 64 matchup. FGCU is an incredible 5-0 against the spread this season, obviously covering it against Georgetown.
I do think that the Eagles can keep it going. They didn’t play like a one-hit wonder. They have already beat Miami and Georgetown this season and have shown that they can defend at levels not seen in college basketball. Plus, it is college basketball. And it’s March.
