New England was impressive in their preseason opener last week as the club defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 31-22 and covering the point spread as a +3 ½ point road underdog. Their offense piled up 442 yards on the Eagles defense. The team’s running attack was outstanding for 248 yards rushing on 31 runs from scrimmage. The Patriots go deep in their running back position with Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and LeGarrette Blount all competing for carries in the New England backfield. There is a strong completion for the receiver position with the exiting free agents from a season ago. That competitive environment is good for performance. The Patriots quarterback rotation will be Tom Brady, veteran backup Ryan Mallett and Tim Tebow. Mallett has a good arm and can stretch opposing defenses. The Patriots third stringer Tim Tebow will most likely be playing for his NFL career after a poor 4 of 12 passing performance last week against the Eagles. Look for Tebow to bring his best effort in this game because Bill Belichick has no problem cutting any player from his team who is not doing the job in the preseason and especially his backup quarterback position. We have seen surprise cuts in the quarterback backup positions in recent years by the Patriots. Tampa Bay was not very impressive in their 44-16 home defeat last week to Baltimore. They allowed 24 first half points to the Ravens offense in week one. The Buccaneers run game sputtered and the club committed four turnovers last week with three interceptions thrown by Tampa Bay backup quarterbacks in Mike Glennon and Adam Weber.
