The Washington Nationals won the first game of their double header with the Dodgers on Wednesday but fell in the evening contest. Michael Morse and Steve Lombardozzi each homered and Bryce Harper had a hit as the Nationals scored six runs on nine hits. Starter John Lannan allowed eight hits and six earned runs while striking out three but lasting just 3.2 innings as it was Tyler Clippard who took the loss in the ninth inning. For Thursday’s game Washington starts Ross Detweiler who has won three of his last four decisions. For the season Deteiler has allowed 137 hits and 53 earned runs while striking out 94 over 151 innings for a 3.15 ERA.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are still pushing to make the playoffs as they are two games out in the Wildcard standings. In game two on Wednesday Matt Kemp had two hits including a home run, Adrian Gonzalez had two hits, and Andre Ethier had two hits as the Dodgers scored seven runs on 13 hits. Josh Beckett allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out two over 7.1 innings of work to not factor in the decision as Ronald Belisario got the win and Brandon League picked up the save. For Thursday’s game Los Angeles starts Chris Capuano who hasn’t had a decision in his last three starts. For the season Capuano has allowed 171 hits and 74 earned runs while striking out 157 over 185 innings of work for a 3.60 ERA.
Washington is 8-3 in their last eight home games against a team with a winning record, 2-5 in their last seven game three of a series, and 10-4 in Detweiler’s last 14 starts. Los Angeles is 4-9 in their last 13 games overall, 5-2 in their last seven games against the NL East, and 7-2 in Capuano’s last nine starts in game three of a series. Los Angeles is 6-1 in the last seven meetings of these two.
